Tamil Nadu Dr J Jayalalithaa Fisheries University (TNJFU) is one of the State funded professional Fisheries Universities in India imparting education, research and training to enhance fish production in the country. The University was established in 2012 (as per TN Act 12/2012) at Nagapattinam with its constituent units located all over the State. This University is having a dedicated faculty strength of more than 100 fisheries scientists for academic and research in different disciplines of fisheries science. Though the primary role of this university is academic, the academic pursuits are supported by research that is being taken up by the faculty staff. This University is taking up both applied and basic science research that would strengthen the academic works of the faculties. In research line,the University has a strong research base with an exclusive Directorate of Research involved in strategic planning of research programmes, establishment of linkage with research organizations at National and International level, monitoring of research projects/schemes and research documentation with the following mission:

  • Achieving excellence in fisheries research by inspiring the faculty to take up basic and applied research in areas of relevance to serve the needs of fisheries sector.

The way forward:

The research programmes are undertaken through different constituent units (Colleges Directorates and Centres) of this University for the benefits of fish farmers, fish processors, fisherfolk, fisheries entrepreneurs and society at large.Our focus lies on fish production, biotechnology, aquatic animal health, post-harvest technology (fish processing and fish quality) andother field related issues.

 

The University has operated 73 projects to a value of Rs.1317.10million, which was obtained from various research funding agencies of Govt. of India, and Govt. of Tamil Nadulike Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR), Dept. of Biotechnology (DBT), Dept. of Science and Technology (DST), Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI), Central Planning Commission, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC), National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB), and National Agricultural Development Programme (NADP), Tamil Nadu Innovation Initiative (TANII) project of State Planning Commission, Entrepreneur Development and Innovation Institute (EDII) project of Tamil Nadu Government, Tamil Nadu Government Part II Schemes, IAMWARM project of World Bank, and GOMBRT from 2013.There is a share from the industries also by way of Industry-Institute linkage programmes. Of these 73 projects, 47 projects worth for Rs. 657.1 million have been completed as of December’ 2021 and 26 projects to the tune of Rs. 660.0 million are presently in operation.
