ABOUT UNIVERSITY
Anna University was established on 4th September 1978 as a unitary type of University, offering higher education in Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Applied Sciences and Management, relevant to society's current and projected needs. The University was formed by bringing together and integrating four well-known technical institutions in the city of Madras (now Chennai), namely, College of Engineering Guindy (Established in 1794); Alagappa College of Technology (Established in 1944); Madras Institute of Technology (Established in 1949); School of Architecture & Planning (Established in 1957). One of the Campuses, CEG, is the oldest technical Institution established outside of Europe. The University offers 31 UG and 88 PG Programmes in various disciplines in the University Departments. Anna University was converted to an affiliated type of university in 2011, and presently 510 Colleges are affiliated under its ambit. The University is ranked 427th in the 'QS World University Ranking 2024', 10th in India, the first among the State and Private Universities in India, and placed in the Rank band of 501-600 in 'The World University Ranking 2024' and 2nd in Indian Higher Educational Institutions. Also, it is accredited with an A++ grade in the third Cycle by NAAC till August 2030. The 'h' index of the University is 186 (Scopus), the highest among the Universities in Tamil Nadu. Anna University received 'Clarivate India Research Citation Excellence Award (2021)' for the highest citations among the State Universities in India. Atal Incubation Centre, established in 2020 with support from Atal Innovation Mission, NITI Aayog, nurtured over 100 Startups, of which 38 tech startups were identified and incubated. Centre for Aerospace Research (CASR) of Anna University designed the first microsatellite, 'ANUSAT', and successfully launched the PSLV-C12 vehicle.
ABOUT DEPARTMENT
The College of Engineering Guindy was the first to introduce Bachelor’s programme in Asia in Electrical Engineering in the year 1932. The first women electrical engineer of India graduated from this Department. The Department of EEE has been a pioneer in offering one UG program and six PG Programmes namely Power Systems Engineering, Power Electronics and Drives, High Voltage Engineering, Control and Instrumentation, Embedded System Technologies, Power Engineering Management and Ph.D. research programme. It is also a QIP recognized Department. The under graduate programme has been accredited for 6 years till 2028 by the National Board of Accreditation. The Appadurai Chair for Power Systems, which was established in the year 1981, is functioning in collaboration with the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Cooperation Limited (TANGEDCO). The Department has excellent laboratories to facilitate the learners on world class standards and has well qualified faculty members. It is a UGC – CAS supported and DST – FIST sponsored Department and is actively engaged in research projects funded by UGC, AICTE, DRDO, etc and several consultancy works. Presently the faculties are working towards Electric Vehicle Technology, a 15 Crore project funded by RUSA. The Department is committed to produce analytically proficient and technologically competent Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
